Alpenglow Sports Mountain Festival - Summer 2018

The Alpenglow Sports Mountain Festival is the ultimate outdoor recreation summer kick-off event in Tahoe.  For a week, the public can choose from an array of activities such as trail running races, running clinics, yoga, wildflower hikes, SUP tours, rock climbing lessons, birdwatching, open water swimming, dog first aid, book signings and special guest speakers and more. The Mountain Festival covers it all. The festival is from June 16-June 24^th, and there are several options every day to learn something new or just get out in nature.

The festival opens with the epic Broken Arrow Skyrace, which is a 3 day event drawing elite trail runners and recreational runners alike. Skyracing is a European style of running that is characterized by off-trail scrambling, steep terrain and loose rock descents. The majority of the race will take place above 6,000 feet and all course options (52K, 26K, 10K, Vertical K) have a considerable amount of vertical gain and loss. A true mountain adventure, the Broken Arrow Skyrace is not to be missed for running enthusiasts. Live music, craft beer, food and film will greet runners at the end of the course surrounded by the gorgeous peaks of Squaw Valley.

For those who aren’t ready to participate a race, trail running, swimming, SUP and rock climbing clinics run throughout the week and can provide the foundation to help participants learn the fundamentals of each sport. There is so much to do in Tahoe and so many ways to enjoy nature. The Alpenglow Mountain Festival is an unbelievable opportunity to get out and see what these mountains are all about.

Take Care Tahoe - New Collaborative Website

Interested in learning more about Lake Tahoe? Want to know about opportunities to get involved in local environmental efforts? Need some ideas for outdoor adventure?  A new website has been launched by a group of people who love Lake Tahoe and want to spread the word about news and events that relate to environmental education and experiencing the beauty of the Lake Tahoe region. Take Care is a comprised of more than 20 environmental organizations in the Tahoe region, and their new website is TakeCareTahoe.org.

The goal is to spread the word about regional education, volunteer opportunities and events such as hikes and beach clean-up days that everyone can participate in. The website is a useful resource for visitors and residents alike, and allows searches to be conducted for specific date ranges to see what is happening on any particular day. There are events and education opportunities for kids as well to help raise awareness about basic bear awareness, litter clean up, and camping safety.

This collaboration of the local organizations who are dedicated to the care and stewardship of the Lake Tahoe region is a fantastic resource. Anyone who has experienced the beauty of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding areas knows that they are unlike anywhere else in the world, and we should all do our part to keep them that way.

Truckee-Donner Land Trust - 2018 Summer Hiking Series

The Truckee-Donner Land Trust has been protecting and preserving scenic and historic land in the greater Truckee area for more than 25 years. Past and current projects are targeted based on their high natural resource value with the goal of encouraging sustainable public use on these properties. Their success stories are too many to name, but anyone who recreates in the Truckee/Donner area on trails is likely enjoying the great outdoors on a parcel of land that the Land Trust helped to protect or bring into public use.

The Land Trust is very proactive in encouraging community involvement whether it be through donations, trail work or other outdoor events. Recently the 2018 Summer Hiking Series was announced which will include over 40 hikes at 11 different properties this summer. Some highlights include The Royal Gorge Rim Trail, Perazzo Meadows, Mt. Lola and Castle Valley just to name a few. There are hikes suitable for people of all ages and a variety of options for different distances and difficulty. Hikes are guided by a docent and there are detailed descriptions on the TDLT website for all of the hiking options.

Registration is open now for the upcoming summer season. This is an amazing opportunity to see some of the most beautiful and unspoiled land in the region. Get out there and enjoy.
