SnowFest! 2018

SnowFest is a North Lake Tahoe tradition that originated in 1982.  It is an annual 10-day event that takes place all over North Lake Tahoe with over 100 activities for the whole family and even the family dog. With all the new snow falling this week/weekend, there is much to celebrate in and around Tahoe.  

The festival starts off with a bang with fireworks at Commons Beach in Tahoe City on Friday, March 2 at 7:30pm.

On Saturday March 3, the Tahoe City fire station will be hosting a pancake breakfast from 7-11 am before the Tahoe City SnowFest parade which starts at Safeway in Tahoe City and runs through town ending at Save Mart. The notorious Gar Woods 30^th Annual Polar Bear Swim will take place at 2:30pm with tons of crazy people braving 39 degree water and snow. Participants swim to the end of the Gar Woods pier and back to shore to try and win a cash prize, but most people just do it for fun. Enjoy the action with a famous Wet Woody or a hot cocoa to keep warm.

Throughout the week the fun doesn’t stop with events like: Pete ‘N Peters Bar Game Olympics, the Eagle Wings Dance Pageant where traditional Native American dances will be re-created and performed, Za’s annual Clam Bake, Bridgetender’s Ribfest and the Wine n’ Ice carving competition just to name a few.

The kids will enjoy meeting the rescue dogs of Squaw Valley, S’more Saturday in Kings Beach, the Snow Sculpture contest at the River Ranch, and the I-Did-A-Run race. Hosted at Tahoe Donner Downhill ski resort, the I-Did-A-Race is for dogs of all shapes and sizes. Dogs pull a covered wagon across a snowy track to raise money for the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe.

SnowFest is a perfect way to celebrate all the new snow we have received and to enjoy fun events all around the Tahoe region.

It's that time of year-the shoulder season-which is typically a slower time of year in the Tahoe area.  This year, however, it has not felt slow yet as Truckee is still buzzing on the weekends and the shops and restaurants are packed.  The weather has been just perfect with temperatures in the 70’s and 80’s and crystal clear blue skies.  It is a great time to be enjoying Tahoe, the changing colors and cool crisp nights. 

Despite the hustle and bustle around town restaurants are still offering their shoulder season specials.  This is a great excuse to get out and try new places or enjoy your favorite place at a discounted price.

 

Christy Hill in Tahoe City boasts incredible lake views from its lakeside location is offering a $25/3 course menu.  Offered Sunday – Thursday, you can’t go wrong as everything out of their kitchen is delicious! 

Pianeta, Christy Hill’s sister restaurant in Truckee, is offering a similar deal.  Now through December 10th come in Sunday-Thursday for a $25 dinner.  Includes wine, soup or salad and pasta dish.  The pasta is made in-house and each one is sure to please with outstanding flavors and variety.  

Wolfdale’s in Tahoe City has been a locals favorite since its opening in 1978.  “Cuisine Unique” means you get delicious dishes that are essentially Asian and European with a California flare.  Don’t miss out on the Hawaiian ahi tuna poke cones for an appetizer.  Look for the coupon in this months Moonshine Inc. newspaper and get a 2 for 1 dinner entrée deal. Act fast, this deal is only through November 23rd. 

The Soule Domain is located in Crystal Bay with great ambiance; it is a cute old Tahoe cabin that has been in business for 28 years now.  Not only is it a great place to enjoy a cozy fall evening, the food is phenomenal.  Look for the coupon in this months Moonshine Inc. newspaper and enjoy a 2 for 1 entrée deal.

Fourth of July in Truckee/Tahoe

Fourth of July in Truckee/Tahoe

Saturday is the 4th of July and the best way to celebrate Independence Day is in a small town.  Truckee puts on a full display of quintessential Americana events.  Wake up early and start your day off right by heading down to Truckee fire station #92 and fill up on a delicious pancake breakfast with fellow community members.  Breakfast is served from 7am to 10am.  If you want to burn off some of those pancakes or just test your speed against some of the best in town, enter the Firecracker Mile race.  This 1 mile downhill race starts at 9:45 from the Gateway center on Donner Pass Road, follows the parade route and ends in downtown Truckee in front of the parade judging stand.  Click here to sign up early.   

From the finish line you can pick a spot along the parade route that travels down Donner Pass Road from Tahoe-Truckee High School ending in Historic Downtown Truckee.  Parade starts at 10am and is usually over around noon.  This year’s theme is “Live-Work-Play TRUCKEE” and will celebrate everyone in our community that enjoys life in the mountains every day or when visiting.  Don’t miss the fire engines, old cars, hometown floats, marching bands, dancing, bike riding, equestrian groups and so much more in-between.  

What’s next?… Beach time!  The shores of Lake Tahoe and Donner Lake will be packed with kids, family, friends, food, drinks and plenty of fun.  With temperatures predicted to be in the 80’s, you can’t go wrong with some fun in the sun and water. 

Come nighttime, bring a blanket, lay back and get ready for the firework show!  Depending on what beach you end up at, there are a few firework shows to choose from.  Below is an outline of locations so you can be sure to get the best spot!

North Tahoe Outdoor Summer Concerts

The summer is heating up and so are the outdoor music events!  You better rest up on Monday nights because every other day of the week you will not want to miss live outdoor music in the North Lake Tahoe area. 

Start your week of music in the Village at Squaw Valley with Bluesdays Tuesdays featuring acclaimed blues musicians. Or, head over to Gray's Crossing in Truckee to PJ's Live Music Series. On Wednesday it’s Music in the Park, one of Truckee’s most treasured summer events. Surrounded by trees and adjacent to the Truckee River, an elevated terraced amphitheater lawn looks down at the stage hosting a favorite local band.  Truckee keeps the fun going mid-week as Truckee Thursdays features two artists on two stages.  This week you will enjoy Patrick Nevins on the corner stage and Jeff Jones on the main stage as you jump in the social scene at the beer garden. 

TGIF!!!  Time for music on the beach at Kings Beach. Sink your feet into the sand with a great band in front of you and the summer sunset over Lake Tahoe in the distance.  Cool it off with ice cold Sierra Nevada Summer Ale at the beer garden. On Saturday, make your way up to the Village at Northstar for live music on the main stage overlooking the roller skating rink.  Sit back and relax around the fire pits with cocktails (or smores) from the cabana bar or strap on your skates and take a spin to the beats.  Then it is Sunday and time my favorite- the Concert Series at Commons Beach in Tahoe City.  Get there early for a good spot on the lawn and get ready for a family friendly dance party!  With Lake Tahoe as a backdrop, a play structure for the kids and food and beer tents, there is no better way to spend a Sunday evening. 

The best part?… it’s all FREE!  That’s 83 bands playing live for you throughout the summer.  Bring  a blanket or a low-back chair and set up with family, friends, or a fun date.

Art on the Beach

Art on the Beach

Kings Beach has recently turned into a gigantic display of public art.  Pair this with amazing winter sunsets and it’s a great way to spend a Tahoe evening.  Where does this art come from?  It comes from you and me and anyone who wants to contribute.  My 1 1/2 year old daughter helped my husband and I build our little mark on the beach.

Other’s spent hours perfecting their mark by carefully constructing rock towers and designs that exceed 5 feet tall.  What a fun experience to share with loved ones and be proud of. 

After building your sculpture or just admiring others, step back and enjoy the sights.  Bring a picnic dinner (and warm clothes) and enjoy the fresh air and breathtaking view of Lake Tahoe.  If it’s getting late and the sun has gone down, there are plenty of great restaurants nearby to continue the night and reminisce about the day.
