With a Ho Ho Ho, Christmas is just around the corner.  Santa is out and about at the Tahoe resorts just before his big night on December 24th.  Santa will be riding trains at Squaw Valley, eating breakfast at Northstar and can even be seen out on the slopes.  Keep an eye out for the man in the red suit, he will be full of holiday cheer and available for last minute present requests from the kiddos.  Check out Santa’s schedule below to be sure to catch him in action.

Friday, November 17^th

Thanksgiving is around the corner. To kick off the holiday, the Downtown Holiday Festival & Bud Fish Tree Lighting in Downtown Truckee is this Friday.  This event has been a local tradition for over 35 years and brings out the kid in all of us.
  

Starting off the night at 4:15pm, local elementary school children will be decorating 37 small trees that hang on the light posts lining Donner Pass Road in downtown Truckee.  Each class will make hand crafted ornaments, each tree is unique and creative.  Take a stroll down the lane to admire the young artists at work on their class tree.  

   

As the night starts to turn to dusk head over to the train station and warm up with some hot cocoa and cookies.  Keep your eyes open as the man in the red suit arrives in style aboard Truckee’s own vintage fire engine.  Santa will oversee the lighting of the town tree and all of downtown while the crowd helps with the countdown.  

  

Kids of all ages are welcome to come and sit on Santa’s lap and tell him a Christmas wish.  Photographers will be capturing the moment for each family.  

By the end of the night, town will be full of twinkling lights and ready for the holiday season!

Tahoe Film Fest

Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships (SWEP) is proud to present the third annual Tahoe Film Fest which will present environmental films in Incline, Truckee and Northstar November 30 – December 3, 2017. A stacked list of independent films are scheduled for this four-day event ranging from local to internationally awarded features. Go check out one or buy the all-access pass and see as many as you can. Here are some examples of what is in store:  

"Josephine's Demons" talks with local children in Truckee and highlights the struggles that children are facing today.

"An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power" is Al Gore’s new documentary to continue his fight against the world’s climate crisis.
  

"The New Environmentalists" will close out the event at the Northstar Village Cinema on December 3rd. It is an Emmy award winning series, narrated by Robert Redford that features inspiring portraits of six passionate and dedicated activists.

The final Tahoe Film Fest event is the 2017 SWEPPY Awards where SWEP will award one of their partners for their role and contributions that make their program possible. This event is held on December 2, 2017 at Margs Taco Bistro. A night of food, drinks, a raffle and of course, the SWEPPY winner!
Sierra Watershed Educational Partnerships (SWEP) collaborates with local teachers, school districts and community partners to address pertinent environmental issues. SWEP programs emphasize service learning because of the multiple benefits to both students and communities. Students benefit by participating in meaningful learning activities that are relevant to their life experience, developing higher-order thinking skills such as analysis, problem solving, and decision-making, and exploring future career pathways. Communities benefit from service learning projects because the service activities in which the students engage address a specific community problem or meet a particular community need. An additional benefit is the creation of young community members with a strong sense of civic responsibility and the skills, experience, and leadership to accomplish community good.

Fall Fish Festival

The Kokanee Salmon are the most colorful and fascinating fish in Lake Tahoe. The Taylor Creek Visitors Center in South Lake Tahoe is the best place to go and view the fish while they are spawning in the Fall. The US Forest Service constructed viewing center where the public can watch the stream profile through a window that has been built into the ground with a tunnel walkway similar to being at an aquarium. The Kokanee start to spawn in early October and around 80,000 salmon will swim upstream to lay eggs. As the fish begin to spawn, they turn a bright red color that is surprising to see in the water. When the female lays her eggs in the creek gravel, she will then start to turn white and begin to decompose, ending the one-year life cycle. The males will then protect the eggs for a few more days before the end of life cycle begins for them. To catch with natural life process in action is exciting and educational.
 

The first weekend in October the Taylor Creek Visitors Center, located 3 miles north of South Lake Tahoe, will be hosting the annual Fall Fish Festival. From 10am – 4pm on Saturday and Sunday visitors can stroll the 1/2 mile Rainbow Trail loop as Forest Service biologists will engage visitors in the wonders of Taylor Creek. The trail will take you through forests, meadows and marsh lands to the creek where the Kokanee salmon will be within a few feet of your own feet.

Events for the weekend will include children’s activities such as treasure hunts, fish art and a Smokey the Bear visit, educational programs and the Kokanee Trail Run on Sunday that includes a 1/2 marathon, 5K and 10K.

The Great Reno Balloon Races

Are you ready for the most colorful event of the season? Starting early in the morning on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, have your eyes to the skies as over 100 bright and colorful hot air balloons lift off for the Reno Hot Air Balloon Races. This event is the largest free hot air balloon event in the world and is right out the back door. In 1982 the event took place with only 20 balloons and now, 35 years later, it is a world-renowned and locally beloved community tradition.

It is an early morning. However, the experience is astonishing and well worth the early alarm wake up. The first event starts at 5:00am each morning with Dawn Patrol. It is still dark outside as everyone gathers at the park. Coffee and pastries are available and the excitement can be felt with other fellow balloon spectators. The early morning portion of the event consists of a handful of balloons that are qualified to fly in the dark. The balloons glow, twinkle and fly along with choreographed music across the darkened sky.
 

As the sun rises and the air starts to warm up there is a small break as the balloons are preparing for take-off. Wandering around the wide open grounds of Rancho San Rafael Park is a great opportunity to talk and mingle with the balloon crews and balloon drivers. Before you know it, the balloons start to rise all around. These balloons are truly giants. It’s incredible. They come in all shapes, colors and sizes. Then, slowly, each balloon takes off one by one filling the sky above. It is a wonderful spectacle and experience that you will never forget.
 

There is fun to be had all day at the park. Check out Balloon Boulevard for crafts, souvenirs, food and drinks. Tethered balloon rides for children are available to experience what it is like to hang in a basket below the great balloon. Don’t bother to change out of your nighty. This event is also the world’s largest pajama party with competitions for the best pajamas and best bed head.

The Lake Tahoe Autumn Food and Wine Festival

The Lake Tahoe Autumn Food and Wine Festival is coming up on September 8-10th. One of the areas premier gourmet events is happening at Northstar, California. The Village at Northstar will turn into a culinary mecca for the weekend with a splash of wine! Bring the whole family and enjoy cooking seminars and demonstrations, culinary competitions, wine tastings, a Farm to Tahoe dinner, live music and a gourmet marketplace.
  

There are many events throughout the weekend that compliment the main event that is located in the heart of the Village. The Farm to Tahoe dinner and Vertical Mountainside Wine Tasting are already sold out, however, this year is sure to be an exciting and successful event. My favorites are the "Take a Hike! & Progressive Picnic" and "The Grand Tasting & Culinary Competition" to close out the weekend.
  

Saturday, September 9th at 11am get ready to explore the great outdoors of the Tahoe National Forest. With a professional trail guide there to point out all the native flowers, birds and trees that surround, you will not want the four mile hike to end. Need more convincing? There will be various trailside beer tastings and tapas along the way!
 

Sunday, September 10-the most anticipated of all events. "The Grand Tasting & Culinary Competition" is where more than 25 top chefs in the region will be formally judged for their food and wine pairing. The People’s Choice Award is the most coveted amongst contestants, so be sure to be there and make your vote count.

July 8 – August 27, 2017

Are you ready to do something different? Ready to spend and evening in a location that will take your breath away? Ready to see world class performances in the most beautiful setting? The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival is here for the next two months. A variety of live performances are set on the stage that is nestled in the rocks of Sand Harbor State Park on Lake Tahoe. Enjoy the warm summer nights with a good friends, a cold beverage in hand and a picnic dinner. Watch the sun go down behind the mountains as the stage is illuminated and the show goes on into the night.  

The spot light show this year is Shakespeare’s "Love’s Labour’s Lost" about a King’s court and a hysterical mess when a beautiful princess arrives after the court has been devoted to their studies and free of women. The other theatrical performance is "The Hound of the Baskervilles", a Sherlock Holmes story performed by three actors creating dozens of characters. Other shows to take part in are blues, jazz, world and rock music, ballet and a night of interactive history with Alexander Hamilton.  

The gates open at 5:30pm, and Shakespeare’s Kitchen & Bar is right inside to purchase dinner. Enjoy the meal before in the dining area or take it to your seats. Options include salads like crab & shrimp louie, smoked tri-tip sandwich, the black & blue hamburger or mahi-mahi tacos. Save time- you can order ahead when you buy your ticket and just simply pick up when you arrive.

Make it a good night. Go once or go see them all. The outdoor venue is gorgeous and unique. A Tahoe experience that truly should not be missed.

Northstar Noel Nights

Step into a magical world as Northstar presents Noel Nights every Thursday night leading up to Christmas Day.  The center piece of the village is 9,000 square foot ice skating rink with a 35 foot tree glowing bright with holiday lights at the foot of the rink.  Surrounding the rink you will find 8 open fire pit areas for family and friends to gather around, warm up, tell stories and roast marshmallows.  

Noel Nights is the event to complement this iconic mountain scene at the Northstar Village.  A one horse open sleigh will be taking visitors of all ages around the Village center.  Great Basin Carolers will be singing songs of the season as they meander through the Village.  The night will be filled with complimentary kids crafts and activities.  Pick one or do them all with gingerbread man decorating, face painting and ornament crafts.  Be on the lookout for holiday characters and everyone’s favorite, Santa who will show up at 6pm for photos. 

There are only a few remaining Noel Nights, don't miss this fun holiday tradition.
