Truckee Invests in Public Space

 

In addition to the large investments that the resorts are making to improve the mountains, Truckee is also investing in public spaces such as sidewalks, trails, and community art displays. The town's focus on constantly improving enhances the Truckee experience for locals and visitors alike.

In Historic Downtown Truckee, over the last few years sidewalk expansions have made their way along Donner Pass Road from the Moody’s building all the way to the roundabout just before the HWY 80 overpass. This makes for a much better and safer walking experience to enjoy the retail shops and restaurants, and encourages connectivity. In some aras you will find the walkways open up to sitting areas and gathering spaces. Near Marty's Cafe, there is a life size chess board, and across the street there is an eagle’s nest monument honoring veterans. On the corner of Bridge Street and Donner Pass Road there are plenty of places to sit and watch the activity of downtown. The sidewalk expansions have also allowed for some restaurants to expand their outdoor dining areas.
 

Public art has been an investment and is showing up in Truckee more and more. In Historic Downtown Truckee there are various sculptures and art bike racks. You can’t miss the gigantic bike sculpture by local artist Fred Besch located at the intersection of Donner Pass Road and Spring Street. Another is the railroad tie and rock sculpture that is harder to find, tucked back on Jibboom Street at the new park on the corner of Jibboom Street and Bridge Street.    

For everyone who wants to get outside and enjoy the warm sunshine or the cool crisp air, there are new Class I bikeways popping up all over town. There is a new connection from Historic Downtown Truckee along the Coyote Moon golf course and to entrance of Tahoe Donner. Another new segment has made it’s way into the Martis Valley with plans connect all the way through and to Lake Tahoe. The path now can be accessed directly across from the Hampton Inn and continues through the Northstar side of the Martis Valley about 1 mile. Click here for a map of paved bike trails.

Trails and gathering spaces enhance the experience in any town, and the fact that Truckee has embraced these investments will secure Truckee's place as one of the most desirable mountain towns anywhere.

Downtown Truckee Tree Lighting

Downtown Truckee Tree Lighting

It’s been a Truckee tradition for over 35 years.  The Bud Fish Tree Lighting is this Friday, November 18th.    The holiday fun begins this weekend in Historic Downtown Truckee with a visit from jolly old St. Nick, tree decorating, singing and holiday treats.  Local elementary school children will start the night by decorating 37 trees that line Donner Pass Road with hand crafted ornaments.  Take a stroll down the lane as each tree is unique.  

Around 5pm, keep your eyes out as Santa arrives aboard an antique fire engine.  All the kids flock to the train depot with a smile as they have just spotted the man in the red suit himself, Santa!  Santa will oversee the lighting of gigantic tree and all of downtown while the crowd helps with the countdown.  

Santa will invite all children to sit upon his knee for pictures and listen to Christmas wishes.  Hear the cheerful tunes sung by carolers as you enjoy the crisp air, hot cocoa, cookies and holiday cheer.

The Evolution of Historic Downtown Truckee: Part 2

Historic downtown Truckee holds centuries of stories and many memories for so many that work, play and have visited the area throughout the years. It is always changing with new shops and restaurants but I like to think that it’s better today than it ever has been. To spend a day enjoying all that the downtown area has to offer is worth the trip.

Let’s continue our stroll down the streets of Historic downtown Truckee for a look into what was and what continues to serve this thriving community.

The Squeeze-In is a long-time favorite for the best (and biggest) omelets on the planet and has been in the same location since 1974. Step inside to see the history literally written on the wall in marker from past patrons. A close look will find some of our local Olympian’s mark on the walls.
The oldest retail establishment in the region is located right in the middle of the strip, Cabona’s, open since 1918. Now full of beautiful clothing for men and women, this was once the place to buy fishing supplies, tires and general merchandise at Dave Cabona’s Dry Goods Emporium.

Have you tried a loaf of bread from Truckee Sourdough Company? This tastiness all began in the family owned Ponderosa Deli. Keith Nikkel and his bread company outgrew the deli and are currently located just across the railroad tracks. The Deli was sold and made it’s mark for quite a few more years but is now home to Best Pies where you can find a full bar and some delicious New York style pizza.

A second story location is Truckee’s newest restaurant, Truckee Tavern and Grill. With some of the best drink concoctions in town and great food the Tavern has already made its mark. This is also the newest building on the strip as it was rebuilt after a devastating explosion in 1993 leaving 2 restaurants with nothing and an empty gap in the strip. Josephine’s, an Italian restaurant never re-opened after the accident. Wong’s Garden, Chinese cuisine is still serving but moved off the main drag to the other side of town.

The Past Time Bar and the Tourist Club are a must see. Both have been making their mark and serving cold beer for decades from noon into the wee hours of the night. Step inside the Tourist Club, order a PBR or whiskey and enjoy the scenery. You will be sure to find something new every time as the walls are covered in everything from old photos to hunting trophies.

Truckee continues to evolve but the charm and character of the historic downtown area remains the same.

The Evolution of Historic Downtown Truckee: Part 1

Tucked between Trout Creek and the Truckee River running parallel to the Transcontinental Railway, Historic downtown Truckee is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. There are many businesses, shops and restaurants that have been around for years and others that are just starting to make their mark.  Each unique building and storefront has it’s own story to tell.  Let’s take a glance at the evolution of Truckee’s Historic downtown business district.

At the Bar of America, most people know that the clever name came from the original use of the building.  Step inside and see if you can find the old teller windows and other hints of banking history. 

Next along was a favorite for many, the Irish pub and restaurant, OB’s Board.  Now divided into three spaces it houses the delicate cuisine of Restaurant Trokay, the jewels at Blue Stone and the chic clothing of Nomad Boutique.  Tucked in the back of Bluestone, see if you can find an old oven that was part of a bakery that pre-dates OB’s.  

Always a popular gathering spot, Pianeta Ristorante was once Truckee River Book and Tea followed by The Left Bank restaurant where a French chef brought Truckee residents new flavor well ahead of its time.  Take a peek inside to see the technical details of the artwork from highly respected and talented local artist, Pam Krone, on the walls and ceilings. 

Where once the locals shopped for every imaginable tool, nail, lightbulb and paint color, now you can find every pot, pan, spatula and teapot.  The very popular Roberts Hardware is now the Cooking Gallery.  

Tahoe Mountain Realty, formerly Tahoe Mountain Resorts Real Estate occupied present day Riverside Studios.  At the forefront of the resort community development, this was a beautiful showroom sharing the beginnings of what has now become the some of the most sought after properties in the North Lake Tahoe area. TMR now occupies the Icon building at Northstar and 2 other Truckee locations.

Truckee Thursdays 2015

Truckee Thursdays 

A favorite summer event that closes down Donner Pass Road in old town Truckee every Thursday starts this week! Now in its 8th year, Truckee Thursdays is fun for the whole family. With artisan vendors lining the streets, there are great local products to be found. The downtown shops also keep their doors open late and usually offer specials, additional entertainment or food and beverage. Don’t miss the fun for the kids in the bounce house or hula-hooping. 

Live music will fill the streets as the band sets up in the train depot parking lot. Grab a beer or cocktail from the beer garden and get your groove on. This week will you will hear beats from The Far West, a Los Angeles-based alt-country/American band.  

Hungry yet?… A variety of food choices exist from street vendors, a farmers market, and all of the great restaurants right there in downtown Truckee. My favorite is Red Truck food truck or sipping a cocktail on the deck of the Truckee Tavern looking down on all the action.
