Northstar Summer 2017

Northstar’s Fired Up For Summer

Northstar is getting fired up for summer. By next weekend operations will be in full swing around the Village and on the mountain.

The Village at Northstar is open and summer activities will be happening daily. The roller skating rink and mini golf are fun for the whole family. Every kid will want to take a turn on the Spider Climb and Bungee Trampoline on the overlook terrace above the roller rink. Other activities are also offered such as gem painting, pottery, build a bear and candle making.

Starting now, the Village Wine Walk will happen the last Saturday of each month. Pick up a souvenir tasting glass and meander through the shops sipping wine and snacking on hors d’oeuves.

A new dining option in the Village will have its grand opening on June 15th. Yamakai Fish and Sushi Co. will offer a refined menu of seafood, sushi and Japanese-inspired fare. The extensive kids menu, wine list and colorful atmosphere is sure to create a space for families to enjoyably dine together. Located around the ice rink next to the North Face store.

Norhtstar bike park will open Friday, June 16th. For bike park beginners and experts alike, the Specialized Academy at Northstar takes mountain biking to the next level. Riders of all ages receive a personalized coaching experience from certified Specialized instructors and access to top-of-the-line Specialized downhill equipment.

Everyone is looking forward to another great summer at Northstar. When you own in the Village at Northstar, adventure is always right outside your door.

Northstar Village Summer Activities

Iron Horse 512 Is Home Base for the Top 10 Summer Activities in the Village

Wake up as the sun shines into one of the 4 bedrooms that overlook the Village and base of Northstar mountain.  Enjoy the warm tile on your feet as you brush your teeth and step into the shower.  Ready for coffee?  Starbucks is steps away brewing your favorite cappuccino.  What does the day have in store? Here's our "Top 10" favorite activities with Iron Horse 512 Northstar as your home base.

  • A fast paced mountain bike ride at the Northstar's mountain bike park. Bike rentals are downstairs and trails wind down right to your door.
  • Fly fishing at Sawmill Lake or a nature hike with a little help from the Vista Express chairlift to start the day off on a higher level. Gondola access to the mountain is a 3 minute walk and easy to navigate trail maps are readily available.
  • For more adventure, a quick 15 minute drive will have you paddling the crystal blue water on Lake Tahoe.  Waterman’s Landing will have you set up and in the water, no hassle, no fuss.
  • Enjoy a spa treatment at the Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe which is a 8 minute scenic gondola ride away or stroll into the Balance Health Spa in the heart of the Village and sink into bliss for a few hours.
  • Lunch in the Village is easy with Rubicon pizza/italian fare or get a grab and go sandwich at Earthly Delights to enjoy in the comfort of your own living room or sunny deck.
  • For a workout or a relaxing steam, head to the Village Swim and Fitness center which is a 2 minute walk from your door.
  • For a spontaneous tee time, Northstar golf course is a 5 minute drive and offers amazing Martis Valley views with a full service golf shop and restaurant.

  • A kids play land awaits daily with mini golf throughout the Village, Build a Bear, Make a Candle, roller skating, bungee trampoline, rock climbing wall, and gold panning. No need to even get in the car.

  • Gather around the ice rink for live music on the Village stage or have a private party on your patio as you watch from your perch above it all.
  • Dinner options are endless with Mexican at Taco Jalisco (a real local’s favorite), burgers at Chocolate Bar or sushi at the legendary Mikuni’s.

Top 3 Moutain Bike Trails for Spring

Top 3 Moutain Bike Trails for Spring

It is full Spring now and time to put the skis away and get out the Summer gear…

Unless you want to squeeze a few more drops out of Winter and ski Alpine Meadows for the next couple of weekends till May 11th…

My favorite mountain bike trails are free of snow and ready to ride.  Time to get out and enjoy the crisp clean air!

#1 Emigrant Trail
This is a super fun rolling trail that climbs and descends through woods, around meadows, past streams and concludes at Stampede Reservoir.  The trail is all single track,  well marked and not very technical.  A great choice for the novice and intermediate riders or for an early season warm up.

How Long: 10 miles out to Stampede and  10 miles back
Directions to trailhead: Head North on HWY 89 past Gray's Crossing and past East Alder Creek Road.  You will see a turn-off on the right hand side for a picnic area.  This is where I like to start this ride adding about 1 mile but with the added pleasures of a bathroom and picnic tables.  If you miss that, continue on HWY 89 for another mile or so till you cross a bridge.  Just across the bridge on the right is a dirt parking lot with a trail map where you can also start.
Sawtooth Trail

#2 Sawtooth Ridge Trail
The sawtooth ride is a rocky, twisty, thrill ride through the hills above the Truckee River.  Starting in the Sierra Meadows neighborhood of Truckee, this trail will take you on a 10 mile lolly pop shaped loop.  You will be pedaling through the woods and then POP! out of the woods you will be on top of an overlook looking down at the river or climbing up and up and POP! a clearing with views across the canyon to the next mountain range.

How Long: 10 Mile lolly pop loop

Directions to trailhead: From downtown Truckee: Head East on Brockway Road.  Take a right on Palisades Drive at the stop light.  Head into the Sierra Meadows neighborhood.  Take your 3rd right on Silverfir Drive and your second left at Thelin Drive.  The first right is a dirt road.  Take this road in about 1/4 mile and there is a parking lot.  You will find the trailhead and a trail map there.

View from Martis Peak Fire Lookout

#3 Tahoe Rim Trail
There are many different ways to mountain bike the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) but the section on top of Brockway summit has some big rewards for a short ride.  This is a steep climb up to some amazing lookouts over Lake Tahoe.  If you make it to the very top you can visit the Martis Peak fire lookout and see the 360 degree view and over 5 lakes.  Worth the tough climb up and you still get the reward of all that downhill!  If you want to make it to the top you will want to take a left when the TRT merges with a dirt road.  This will put you out onto a paved road for about 1/2 mile till you hit the wooden fire lookout building.

View from Tahoe Rim Trail

How Long: 4 miles up and 4 miles back down
Directions to trailhead: Take HWY 267 south towards Kings Beach.  Drive past Northstar and all the way to the summit of Brockway.  Just as the road starts to head downhill there is a parking area to the right.  Park here.  The trailhead is on the opposite side of the road up a short dirt road where you will find the trailhead and trail map.

Have fun ridding and stay tuned for Northstar Mountain Bike park to open June 15th.  Always a fun time no matter what your ability.
