Restaurant Review

Tacos Jalisco

This week we will celebrate Cinco De Mayo. Cinco de Mayo is a source of pride for the Mexican Americans and a celebration of their culture and heritage. This day in 1862 the Mexican army took an unlikely victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla and has been celebrated in California since 1863. What better way to celebrate than with mexican cuisine. There are a few mercian restaurants to choose from in Truckee but my favorite is Taco’s Jalisco. See you there, this week and especially on Friday, May 5th!
Tacos Jalisco started out as a food truck in 1994, before food trucks were popular and common place. The name Jalisco came from the state in Mexico where owner, Rigoberto ‘Rigo’ Uribe learned the taqueria business before moving to Truckee and meeting his wife, Maria. Less than a year later, they opened a brick and mortar shop in Truckee. Tucked away in the 7-Eleven center in central Truckee, this quickly became a local’s favorite with a line reaching the front door almost any time of open hours. In 2012, the business grew with a second location in the Village at Northstar. Now, the food truck can also be seen back on the streets and posted up at the Truckee River Winery on selected nights in the summer. Jalisco is more than a local favorite, it’s now a place where visitors love to stop every time they are in town. In 2016, Tacos Jalisco won first place for Best Mexican Restaurant in the "Sierra Sun’s Best Of"contest for North Lake Tahoe & Truckee.

Tacos Jalisco’s signature dish is called the Armadillo. This dish takes a little longer than other dishes to prepare but the wait it well worth it. The dish arrives at your table in a hot lava rock bowl full of cactus, shrimp, pork and beef, literally sizzling in a tomato and chili sauce. Served with rice, beans and tortillas to be assembled as you like. Your tastebuds will love the texture, taste and spice.

You really can’t go wrong when ordering because everything is packed with flavor. Want to add some fire? There are 2 house made salsas to pick from. The red, pretty hot and tasty and the yellow, VERY hot and spicy for a very authentic kick! My go-to is the el pastor taco, a small street taco packed with meat served on 2 tortillas and topped with onion and cilantro. I usually order 2 or 3 and sometimes mix it up with various other meat, fish or veggie selections. I also like to add a Jarritos soda or a Pacifico beer in the bottle for fun.

Cheers!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Mexican Restaurants: Truckee CA

Mexican Restaurants: Truckee CA

Looking for some good Mexican dining tonight?  Share in the fun and excitement as today is a source of pride for the Mexican Americans and a celebration of their culture and heritage.  This day in 1862 the Mexican army took an unlikely victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla and has been celebrated in California since 1863.  Take your pick and have fun!

Casa Baeza
Located in downtown Truckee, this has been a local favorite for over 30 years.  It’s all about the outstanding tequila bar.  Famous for their margaritas and  plomas or ‘clay pot’ but don’t be fooled, they are strong!  Find a spot at the bar and if Andres, the owner, is there, you will be sure to be friends by the end of the night.

Taco's Jalisco
Located on the west side of town in the 7-Eleven shopping center.  This is the place for good authentic mexican food.  My favorite and the most unique is the Armadillo.  A thick stew of meat, shrimp and cactus and comes in a  sizzling hot rock bowl (molcajete) and eaten fajita style with tortillas.  They started out as a taco truck around town and now they have doubled the size of their original restaurant.

Taco Station
Located on the far west side of town at the base of Tahoe Donner.  The owners, the Diaz family, have been in Truckee for a very long time.  Formerly located by the train tracks in downtown Truckee (how it got it’s name), they have been in their new location for about 4 years now serving up delicious tacos and burritos.

Marg's Taco Bistro
Located in downtown Truckee.  Marg's is new to Truckee and hasn’t been open for a year yet.  They have a new spin on the authentic Mexican meal with options like the Caprese Taco and the Philly Steak Taco.  Tortillas are house made and you will start off with a few at your table when you are seated!  Try the Watermelon-Mint Margarita for something fun!  When the garage style door opens for an indoor/outdoor seating, it is a great hang out for the warm summer days and into the night.

Los Tacos Bailando
The local taco truck.  If you see this white truck with black lettering, you have to stop.  Great street tacos and burritos.  If you can’t find them, you will be sure to find them this summer at Truckee Thursdays.

Have a fun Cinco de Mayo!
