Tahoe: A Visual History

Tahoe: A Visual History

The Nevada Museum of Art in Reno just opened a new exhibit featuring a unique historical collection from painters, photographers, architects, basket weavers and sculptors whose works are focused on the North Lake Tahoe area.

The visual works will take you through the ages with Native Americans, the transcontinental railroad, tourism, and the ever changing architecture and environment. This is the first comprehensive exhibition to survey artworks related to Lake Tahoe, Donner Pass and the surrounding Sierra region.

Encompassing 15,000 square feet, the museum will span over two centuries of cultural, geographical and creative history. Including original maps of Lake Tahoe, historical paintings from the 19th century, 150 years of photography, contemporary arts and so much more in-between.

The show will run through January 10th, 2016. You will not want to miss this trip through time centered around one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Brockway Campground

Brockway Campground

There has been some exciting news about the first new campground to be proposed in the Tahoe Basin in over 20 years.

Below is an announcement from the developer, Mountainside Partners:

Mountainside Partners and Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) were encouraged by various groups and agencies to exclude the of the Tahoe Basin land from the Martis Valley West Parcel Project, and to look at alternatives other than residential development for the Basin land.

Specifically, local agencies and regional environmental groups asked us to explore a permissible use on the Basin land. We have done just that, and are proposing a campground. A campground is a permissible use under the applicable zoning ordinances, and is in alignment with the TRPA Regional Plan Update mission.
The Brockway Campground is the first new seasonal campground to be proposed in the Tahoe Basin in over 20 years. The primary focus of the campground will be to provide a high-quality, diverse camping experience in North Lake Tahoe to meet existing and future demand for outdoor recreation. It will also support the Tahoe/Truckee region’s destination tourism efforts by offering a new opportunity for visitors to experience North Lake Tahoe.
The Brockway Campground’s minor use permit application will be submitted in the near term to Placer County and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and proposes 550 campsites, which is 282 campsites less than what is allowable for the project. This represents a 34 percent reduction from the number of allowable campsites. Campground amenities are anticipated to include restrooms and showers, guest registration, gathering areas, family pavilions, a swimming pool, a general store, recreational sports rental, dining, and other features.

It is important to note that currently, only two percent of the campsites located within the Tahoe Basin are in North Lake Tahoe. The Brockway Campground will serve to correct the imbalance of campsites within the Tahoe Basin, as well as offer families the ability to enjoy a variety of outdoor recreational activities available in North Lake Tahoe while providing a range of camping experiences including campsites for traditional tents, campers and eco-shelters.

We have shared our vision for the project with groups and agencies including the Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe, North Tahoe Business Association, North Lake Tahoe Resort Association, Tahoe Rim Trail Association, Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association and local Girl Scouts troops, and are encouraged by their initial interest in the campground and the benefits it will offer the North Lake Tahoe area.

Our intention is to offer the public a new opportunity to enjoy an outdoor experience in North Lake Tahoe, and to reconnect with nature. This will be accomplished through thoughtful design that leverages current eco-friendly, environmentally sound practices and materials. We have retained the services of Bud Surles Consulting Group, a respected leader in campground design and implementation, as well as Oz Architecture, an agency that has held long-term design contracts with the National Park Service to carefully design the Brockway Campground.

We are proud of the project being proposed, believe it will be an incredible asset to our community, and a place that people will enjoy for generations to come. For more information about the project, we encourage you to visit www.brockwaycampground.com

West Shore Café

West Shore Café

With Lake Tahoe as your panoramic backdrop, the West Shore Café is the place to treat yourself this summer for a great dinner out.

Located on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe adjacent to Homewood Mountain Resort, this lakeside gem has it all: ambiance, great food, service, and a romantic atmosphere you'll never want to leave.

Enter into the soaring "Old Tahoe" style great room and head straight out to stairs that promenade down to an outdoor dining area.  A wide open deck with breathtaking views out to the Lake and the mountain ranges welcomes you.  Dining tables continue from the deck to down the dock.  There is no other restaurant where you will experience the atmosphere of the deep blue Tahoe waters surrounding your dinner table quite like this.

Chef Kristi Ritchey gathers her fresh seasonal ingredients from the Sacramento farmer’s market daily to create mouth-watering menu options.  The seared scallops are fat, juicy and caramelized, sitting pretty on an orange carrot jus and topped with thinly shaved fried carrots and peas.  Continue with the rack of lamb as each bite melts in your mouth.  Don’t leave without trying  a delicious interpretation of a childhood favorite- the Kit Kat bar served with vanilla peanut butter ice cream.

The summer is filled with fun and lively energy in the restaurant.   Live music on the weekends, marshmallow roasting at the end of the dock on week nights, movies on the lawn on Tuesdays and Painted Vine art classes on Wednesdays are all on the schedule every week.

Stay for dinner, the night or for a week.  Just above the restaurant are 5 guest rooms and suites.  The West Shore Café is a complete sensory experience that you will not want to miss on Lake Tahoe!

Tahoe-Truckee Market Update: August, 2015

Tahoe-Truckee Market Update

August, 2015

As forecast in our most recent update, July, 2015 showed the strongest performance for real estate in the Tahoe-Truckee region across the board. With year-to-date highs for total sales (134), average price ($815,708) and median price ($526,878), as well as the first month this year to crest nine figures for total sales volume ($109,304,945).

Most significantly, the luxury market came alive with 21 total sales topping $1,000,000; nearly double the previous high for any month this year. Somewhat surprisingly, the geography of these luxury sales was distributed more broadly than is typical for heart of summer.  Beyond many lakeside sales typical of the season, several acreage properties scattered around the outskirts of Truckee traded along with luxury homes in Gray’s Crossing, Lahontan and Schaffer’s Mill. Perhaps most notably, two properties sold within Northstar’s Mountainside neighborhood breaking from typical seasonal trends and foreshadowing the release of demand pent-up from winters past.

In our recent Tahoe Mountain Report, we discussed the momentum typical of the second half of any given year to bring up to 35% more sales than in the first half. With July clearly bearing this out, we expect the rest of 2015 to be dramatically the same. In just the past 30 days, 150 properties are newly pending sale including 40 at asking prices above $1,000,000. Among these are 11 Martis Camp homes at an average price near $3,500,000, 8 Schaffer’s Mill residences and 3 Lahontan homes.

With the height of the purchasing season still ahead of us, overall market demand appears strong. As we near the start of school for many families, final summer vacations will begin to blend with ambitions for a great ski season. These forces typically combine to bring strong activity to all market segments as we head into fall.

We look forward to keeping up you updated as to the dynamics of the Lake Tahoe real estate market as events unfold.
