Truckee Roundhouse

Truckee is home to many artists and the town embraces the the unique character and beauty that talented artists can bring.  Truckee Thursdays, a weekly street fair in the summer, is a place for artists to showcase and sell their goods.  Local shops like Riverside Studios and Lorien Powers Jewelry are owned by the artists themselves. Public art like the flowers at the Pioneer Trail roundabout by Troy Carliss and the Locomotion bike sculpture in downtown Truckee by Fred Besch are making our community come alive with character.  Art is important for the soul of a community.

The Truckee Roundhouse, the area’s first maker space.  The intent is to open doors to individuals to pursue their own art aspirations.  Members join by purchasing monthly, annual or short-term memberships which allow them to use all of the machines and facilities.  There are 5 shops within the space, metal, wood, ceramics, textiles and a technology station for computer-aided designs.  The options are endless from welding machines, a carbon dioxide laser cutter in the wood shop, industrial sewing machines and so much more.

Sounds interesting but don’t know where to start? There will be many demonstrations and classes available to members and non-members that range from beginner to advanced skills.  The Roundhouse mission is to support the teaching, practicing and learning of a wide variety of arts, skills and technologies.  Along with structured classes the space encourages peer-to-peer learning.

Thursday, December 1st is the grand opening for the Truckee Roundhouse.  The Mayor of the Town of Truckee, Alicia Barr will be there for the ribbon cutting ceremony starting at 5pm.  From 5pm – 7pm the space is open to the public to come and discover, watch demonstrations on a wide variety of tools, buy your membership and sign up for classes.

Action Packed Weekend in Tahoe

Action Packed Weekend in Tahoe

Summer is just about in full swing here in Tahoe and there is no shortage of events or things to do in the area.

Challenge yourself in a competition of running, swimming, biking or paddle boarding, enjoy a guided tour out on the deep blue waters of Tahoe or participate in a clinic and learn something new.  Whatever you choose, it is sure to be fun and memorable.
The Lake Tahoe Sports Festival kicks off this weekend and runs through next weekend, Sunday, June 26th.  This options are endless as this event is offering triathlon, trail running, stand up paddling, mountain bike clinics, free guided hikes, rides and runs and a movie night.  My favorite event is the Burton Creek Trail Run on Sunday, June 19th.  You can choose between a 6K, 12K or Half Marathon.  The course is all dirt single track and runs through pine forests and high Sierra meadows.  This time of the year is perfect for enjoying wildflowers.  Another epic event is the sunset kayaking tour on Lake Tahoe.  Being out on the lake in the evening as the sky starts to turn colors with the sunset is relaxing, breathtaking and definitely unforgettable.

Summer Solstice (the longest day of the year) is coming up and Tahoe City is celebrating.  The Tahoe City Solstice Festival has a full calendar of events this weekend.  Bringing together art, food, a car show, wine walk, parties and the first summer concert at Commons Beach, it’s time to celebrate the long summer nights.  The North Lake Tahoe Plein Air Open brings 25 artists to the breathtaking scenery of Lake Tahoe for a week ending with a reception at the Tahoe Maritime Museum and art sale in conjunction with the Tahoe City Wine Walk.  The Tahoe City Wine walk is Saturday, June 18th from 12pm – 4pm at a variety of Tahoe City shops and restaurants. Pete ’n Peters is celebrating their 40th anniversary with a street party.  Enjoy appetizers, live music, a DJ and dancing.

Ready for an epic challenge?  For the first time ever in California, Squaw Valley is host to a US Skyrace, the Broken Arrow Skyrace.  This two day event, June 18th and 19th is designed from the classic European Skyraces and is a mix of off-trail scrambling on steep terrain with massive amounts of vertical gain and loss at altitude.  With 3 distances to choose from-54K, 26K or the Vertical K (unique to the Skyrace), most of the terrain is above treeline high above Lake Tahoe.

Have fun with the action packed weekend coming up here in the mountains.

Art Obsessions officially opened its door in June 2011 in Truckee's Historic Downtown District. The gallery quickly gained recognition as a premier source for works of renowned regional and international artists and established itself as a primary source for limited edition prints.

Tahoe: A Visual History

Tahoe: A Visual History

The Nevada Museum of Art in Reno just opened a new exhibit featuring a unique historical collection from painters, photographers, architects, basket weavers and sculptors whose works are focused on the North Lake Tahoe area.

The visual works will take you through the ages with Native Americans, the transcontinental railroad, tourism, and the ever changing architecture and environment. This is the first comprehensive exhibition to survey artworks related to Lake Tahoe, Donner Pass and the surrounding Sierra region.

Encompassing 15,000 square feet, the museum will span over two centuries of cultural, geographical and creative history. Including original maps of Lake Tahoe, historical paintings from the 19th century, 150 years of photography, contemporary arts and so much more in-between.

The show will run through January 10th, 2016. You will not want to miss this trip through time centered around one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Atelier – Truckee, CA

Truckee, CA

The owners behind one of my favorite shops in downtown Truckee, Bespoke have opened up a new shop just two doors down called Atilier.  Atelier, meaning ‘workshop’ in French, opened its doors March 6th, 2015 with a grand showing and champagne toast for all.

The shop is not only a place for artists, crafters and parents to come buy the most unique and quality supplies, but a place for creation. With a letter press set in the front of the store, you can watch resident artists in action.

The best part of all is that you can yourself be an artist and come together with friends and the community to join in one of the many classes offered through Atelier.  The back half of the store is set aside for inspiring community classes.  Every first Friday of the month join in on the "Social Sketch" where you can collaborate and socialize with other artists, casual doodlers and creative people.  Classes are frequent and have diverse themes from sewing to photography to exotic cocktail making.

Check out a full list of classes offered click here.

So if wood carving, yarn, a paint brush, or cheese making appeal to you, stop in to Truckee’s newest community art hub!
