Alpenglow Mountain Festival-Winter

We are in the midst of one of the most comprehensive and fun winter festivals that is hosted in Tahoe; the Alpenglow Mountain Festival-Winter. The festival is focused on exploring some of the best human-powered activities that the Tahoe area has to offer. This is the fifth year of the festival that showcases more than 75 events that are designed for beginner and intermediate mountain recreation enthusiasts. The diverse offerings include back-country skiing and splitboarding, cross country skiing snowshoeing, natural history, yoga, live music, educational workshops, social gatherings, back-country cooking, dog friendly events, winter astronomy events and much more.

The festival started on February 17th and runs through the 25th. The lineup of events covers many different disciplines and is an excellent way to get into or learn about activities that are "off the beaten path". The best and most unique aspect of the festival is that many of the events are free for participants.

A major highlight event of the festival is Nachspektakel, a European-inspired uphill ski touring event. The evening starts at 4pm taking you on an uphill skinning adventure to the top of a mountain to enjoy Lake Tahoe views and a backcountry bonfire. The star-filled sky surrounds as participants enjoy a three-course mountaintop meal. Don’t miss this special night in the Tahoe backcountry.

Winter Resort Openings

Resort Openings

The last day of skiing for the 2016/2017 season in the Tahoe area was at Squaw Valley on July 15th, 2017. Riders were still making turns on the Palisades, Gold Coast and Shirley Lake into the hot days of summer after celebrating the 4th of July on the slopes. Will 2017/2018 season live up to last season? Snow lovers are keeping a close eye on the weather reports but only time will tell.

The first snow of the season arrived this year on September 21st. After a typical Tahoe fall with temperatures in the 70's, some significant snow is in the forecast for this weekend. It’s time to check your gear, make sure you have your pass in hand and get ready to make your first turns of the season.

Mount Rose was the first resort to open this year on October 27th and 28th. With the north facing mountain and the cold temperatures early in the month, the resort was able to open one run for 2 days of riding. Squaw Valley has run the snow guns this week with low temperatures at night and Northstar is sure to follow.

Winter is coming. The resorts are getting ready. Are you?

Below are some projected opening dates for resorts.

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe: Open!
Boreal: Open!
Northstar California: November 17, 2017
Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows: Both Resorts are scheduled to open November 17, 2017
Heavenly: November 17, 2017
Kirkwood: November 22, 2017
Sugar Bowl: Late November

Diamond Peak: December 14, 2017

Warren Miller’s Line of Descent

For the past 68 years, Warren Miller has produced phenomenal winter films that are released each fall season.  Warren Miller himself is now 93 years old and does not have a part in the films, but Warren Miller Entertainment still produces one feature-length ski film per year.  As early as 1956, Miller used to rent show halls near ski resorts so that he could film the next year’s footage during the day and show the current film in the evening.  Now the films are shown all over the world from Australia to China, in thousands of locations big and small and can even be downloaded and streamed online.

This year is no exception and the Warren Miller event is coming to a venue near you!  Don’t miss the premier of "Line Of Descent".  Get fired up for the season by joining in the excitement at one of the public shows- there is no better way to get ready for the epic winter ahead.

4 upcoming California shows to check out:

San Francisco, CA
November 1-2

Sacramento, CA

Record Breaking Winter 2017

Record Breaking Winter 2017

Snow, snow and more snow is whats on everyone’s mind here in Tahoe. With a record breaking January and resorts around Tahoe passing 600 inches this week, we have been blessed with our fair share of white gold. Squaw Valley has announced that they will now be open through July 4, 2017 for skiing. This will mark the 4th season that Squaw has been open for Independence Day, the last year being 2011. Mount Rose and Sugar Bowl have the most snow reported in the region with 680 inches for the season so far at Mt. Rose and 679 inches at Sugar Bowl. There is much talk about breaking 700 inches by the end of March.

SEASON TO DATE SNOWFALL TOTALS (3/7/17)
Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe: 680 inches
Sugar Bowl: 679 inches
Donner Ski Ranch: 670 inches
Squaw Valley: 623 inches
Boreal Mountain: 620 inches
Soda Springs: 620 inches
Alpine Meadows: 617 inches
Northstar California: 607 inches
Kirkwood Mountain: 601 inches
Heavenly Mountain: 600 inches
Sierra-at-Tahoe: 537 inches
Homewood Mountain: 525 inches
Tahoe Donner: 499 inches
Diamond Peak: 446 inches

How does this compare to years past? The winter is far from over and the statistics are considered unofficial but this could be an all-time record winter by the time the last snowflake falls. For example, the last “big” winter was 2010-11. Squaw Valley recorded 810 inches of total snow at 8,000 feet by the end of the '10-'11 season. As of Tuesday, Squaw Valley has a cumulative total of 623 inches already with 3 full months left until the end of the season. Northstar California reported 189” of snow for February alone, more than the 2015-16 season total.

Stormy days, rainy days, windy days and best of all blue bird days have all been a big part of this winter. It hasn't been all bliss with challenges like frequent power outages, school closures, flooding and a lot of snow removal. But, the incredible ski days make up for any inconveniences. The seemingly bottomless snow has covered Tahoe's forests offering endless options to roam in any direction on your nordic skis, snowshoes or on a snowmobile. The season so far has been full of stories that will all contribute to the legendary winter that is underway.

Keep it all coming Old Man Winter. It has been a wild ride and it’s not over yet!

Storm Report January 2017

Storm Report January 2017

The start to 2017 has been nothing short of unbelievable weather-wise. The New Year brought us snow to celebrate.  Some mountains were reporting 5 feet of the fluff and the locals were celebrating.

Then came the rain. Not just rain, but a behemoth atmospheric river from the equator that poured anywhere from 4-8 inches of rain on our beautiful newly fallen snow. A deluge. Flooding, rockslides and dangerous avalanche conditions were all the news. But, we were not left to despair for long. The storm we have been waiting for since 2011 finally showed up. 4 days of snow, power outages, blizzard conditions, wind, mountain and interstate closures...this is the good stuff. We watched it come down for days. Northstar reported 93" of snow as a 4 day total. Squaw reported 73", a lower number probably due to incredibly high winds. (The top of Squaw Valley Peak reported winds at 173 MPH). The National Weather Service says we are at 158% of average. And it is January.

From Open Snow-This has been our snowiest January since 2008, and our biggest snowfall month since March 2012. And the month is far from over with another 10 inches of snow expected in the next day and another potentially big storm moving in next week.
And now, we are excited to get out there and play. A winter wonderland awaits. We have plenty of powder, the resorts are digging out and it sounds like our epic winter has just begun.

For the best insight check out what BA has to say at Open Snow.

See you on the slopes.

Winterizing your Tahoe-Truckee Home

Winterizing your Tahoe-Truckee Home

First, bring in all your patio furniture to a covered location such as under the house storage or garage. This furniture is not made to handle the harsh winter conditions such as heavy snow and freeze-thaw conditions. This also includes potted plants or other garden decor.

Second is landscaping. Tie up all your trees with stretch tape so the heavy snow doesn’t break the small weak branches. Protect the trunks from critters with a protective wrap. Rake all the leaves and fertilize the lawn one last time. This is the basic steps that you will want to take to help the spring revitalization of the garden.

This leads us to the outdoor water system. Underground yard irrigation should be turned off at the main valve. As an extra precaution, higher a plumber to blow compressed air through the pipes to confirm that the pipes have been drained. Above-ground irrigation such as outdoor faucets and hoses should be turned off, disconnected and drained of excess water.

Freezing temperatures will cause frozen water pipes if not properly protected. This includes indoor plumbing. As for interior water sources, it is only a concern if you leave for any extended period of time because when you are there, the house will presumably be heated to your comfort level. When you plan to leave for more than a month or so, it is best to turn off the main shut-off valve and leave the heat set to 55°F to help keep pipes from freezing in interior walls. There are ways now that can monitor your water flow and temperature so you can track this while you are away alerting you to when something might be of concern. This could help keep your mind at ease when the weather man is reporting Truckee as the coldest spot in the nation.

A good practice is to know your plumbing and learn where the water shut off locations are. If your pipes do freeze, time is of the essence. The quicker you can shut off the water, or direct your plumber to the problem, the better chance you have to prevent pipes from bursting.

A good home care provider will be fully versed in what it takes to protect your home from the elements. If you do leave your home for long periods of time, you will have peace of mind knowing someone is looking out for your property.

Lets button up our homes and get ready for the big winter to come!
